A team from the Ghana Independent Infantry Company 1 (GHANCOY 1) at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), led by the Commander – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Felix Kweku Mautsueni, has donated assorted food items to the Aweil State Women Football Association.
The donation, which took place on Friday 7th June 2019, at the Freedom Square, Aweil town, was aimed at nourishing and preparing the female players of the various teams within the Area of Operation (AOR) of GHANCOY 1, mentally and physically, for impending Women’s Football League to be hosted in Wau, come July 2019.
Lt Col Mautsueni added that, the deed was also to strengthen the relationship between GHANCOY and the United Nations on one hand and the people of Aweil and South Sudan, generally.
The items donated included 4 sacks of beans, 2 bags of rice, 1 carton of cooking oil, 1 carton of milk, 6 cartons of bottled water, 4 cartons of fruit juice, 8 boxes of oat, 1 box of Lipton tea and 6 packs of salt and protein.
The beneficiaries were the Tiger, Golden Star, Barkita and Red Army teams who are based in Aweil State and are feverishly preparing to participate in the upcoming competition, which is at the zonal stage and later on, at the national level, should they qualify.
Receiving the items, the Chairperson of the football association – Mrs Sidonia Nyanut, on behalf of the association and the teams, thanked the Commander and his team for the kind gesture and further expressed her gratitude to Mrs Mariam Dadwuda and the entire Civil Affairs department of UNMISS, Aweil Field Office, for the major role they played in facilitating the event.
The Chairperson also added that, women in society have been marginalized for very long but changing times have opened doors for women’s participation in every sector of society today, including sports, considering the donation, as an act of support to the course of women in South Sudan, by a sister country – Ghana, but not just as a kind gesture.
Lt Col FK Mautsueni, who was accompanied by Captain (Capt) Maxwell M Asola-Fadola – Press and Information Officer, Capt B Danquah – Medical Officer, Lt UM Checkora – Food Officer/Platoon Commander, Sergeant (Sgt) Agbodzinshie, Corporal (Cpl) Obuobi and Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Duah, assured the football association that GHANCOY would do anything within its power to support, in realizing the Association’s goals.
