The Sector West Commander (SWEST Comd) of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Chianin Wang, has paid a two-day working visit to the Ghana Independent Infantry Company 2 (GHANCOY 2) Area of Responsibility (AOR).
On his arrival for the visit, which was from Wednesday 20 November to Thursday 21 November 2019, Brig Gen Wang was received by the Officer Commanding (OC) GHANCOY 2, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Daniel Ampadu and the Senior Military Observer (SMO), Aweil – Colonel (Col) Paulo Rocha.
As part of his visit, the SWEST Comd held an interactive session with all ranks on Thursday 21 November 2019, where he indicated that, his visit was to formally welcome GHANCOY 2 and to also introduce himself to personnel of the Unit.
General Wang intimated that the United Nations (UN) was counting on personnel, to take keen interest in the peace process, through the observation of the UN mandate – which is to protect civilians and provide a secured environment for humanitarian agencies to operate.
Brig Gen Wang expressed gratitude to the gallant service men and women who had left their families back home, to support the UN in maintaining peace and stability in South Sudan.
The SWEST Comd and his four-member delegation, seized the opportunity to pay a courtesy call to the Deputy Governor of Aweil State – George Awath, and later on to the South Sudan Peoples Defense Force (SSPDF) 3 Division Headquarters in Wunyiik, where he was received by the Deputy Division Commander – Major General Dominic Chock Ruck and some senior officers of the Division
General Wang’s discussions with the SSPDF 3 Division, centered on issues of mutual concern, in relation to the peace process, and the freedom of movement of military components, in the execution of operational tasks, where the latter pledged their continued support to UN personnel working in their AOR.
The OC, Lt Col Ampadu, in an address at a dinner at the Mango camp, in honour of the SWEST Comd, where there was exchange of gifts, thanked the SWEST Comd and reaffirmed the Unit’s commitment, to work under the guidance of the SWEST, to achieve the overall end state of the mission.
In attendance were the SMO, Team Site Leader of Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring Mechanism (CTSAMM) – Col Khalifa Ibrahim Leader of UN Police (UNPOL), among other key appointment holders from the Aweil Field Office.
