The Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT 15) serving with the United Nations Organization Mission  in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), have used the occasion of breaking the annual Muslim fast of Eid-ul-Fitr, to feed an orphanage called Buna Foundation – an Islamic non-profit foundation based in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Battalion, led by its Commanding Officer (CO) Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Sebastian Abraham Arhin, used the occasion, which took place on Wednesday, 5th June, 2019, to bring smiles upon the faces of victims of war and displacement, as he was assisted by Lt Sharufudeen Abdullah Alhassan Kamany and Muslims of GHANBATT 15, to feed the children.

“A hand of help to children is a hand of help to humanity and any effort that is made for the happiness of others gives us a sense of fulfillment”, Lt Col Arhin stated, as 125 children between the ages of three (3) and sixteen (16), thirty-five (35) of whom were girls, were treated to food and drinks.

Lt Col Arhin noted that peacekeeping does not only imply the separation of two warring factions, but also involves acts by peacekeepers to bring smiles to the millions of the vulnerable, especially women and children who had been affected, adding that, “We look forward to seeing some of you grow up to become soldiers to help maintain peace, both at home and abroad, in order to make the world a better place”.

Lt Col Arhin also urged the children to be inspired by their own stories of having passed through the orphanage in its twenty-five years of existence, to become responsible adults, for this, he said, would require that they become obedient and be guided by the principles of the orphanage – which has cared for a total of 487, since inception – and the society at large.

Mr. Buna Batchily – the founder and manager of the orphanage, was full of gratitude to the CO and his team for the kind gesture and urged the battalion to continue to undertake such endeavours in order to bring smiles to the faces of the needy.
