Suspected illegal miners, have fired upon Operation VANGUARD personnel, who were conducting patrols in the Western Region, when the anti-Galamsey Joint Task Force (JTF) approached their location, in a recent operation.

Another operation at a different location, but within the same period, resulted in the VANGUARD team seizing a single barrel rifle, one locally manufactured rifle and the immobilization of an excavator and 178 Changfans.

In a day long patrol conducted by VANGUARD personnel, on Monday, the 20th of May, 2019, 3 suspected Chinese illegal miners were arrested and they have been identified as Zhou Bing Guang, 47, Zhou Zengkui, 28 and Shi Zhotingquin, 34, within the general area of Bonsa in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.

Both the suspects and a Sinoinpzii branded excavator they were operating for the nefarious acts, have been seized and handed over to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), for further action.

In a communication, the Press Information Officer (PIO) for OPS VANGUARD – Captain Andy Sowatey, decried the attitude of shooting at the soldiers and police as unacceptable and that, Operation VANGUARD would not hesitate to defend itself if fired upon.
