The Force Commander (FC) for the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Lieutenant-General (Lt-Gen) E. R. Martins Filho, has urged troops of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) serving with the international peacekeeping mission – Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT 15) – to maintain the high standard of professionalism Ghanaian troops are noted for in the conduct of their duties on UN Peace Support Operations.
Addressing troops in a durbar during his maiden visit to the GHANBATT headquarters on Thursday, 4th April, 2019, at INCAL Complex, Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the FC admonished troops to be worthy ambassadors of Ghana as they fight towards the achievement of peace in the DRC saying, “a fight for peace is more difficult than fighting war”.
Lt Gen Filho also stressed on the need for troops to undertake the task of ensuring the protection of the civilian population of DRC with all humility, having in mind that “we are here to serve and not to be served”.
The FC commended the battalion for a smooth take over from the previous battalion, the. He urged all to trust in each other by having one mandate and mission since these would make them realize the purpose of deploying to DRC which is the fight for peace.
The FC, who was in the company of the Tactical Commander, Western Sector – Colonel (Col) Sangwan Yashdeep, was received at the GHANBATT HQ by the Commanding Officer (CO) Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Sebastian Abraham Arhin and his able officers, honoured with a Guard of Honour and presented with a plaque by the Battalion.
