The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) – Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Obed Boamah has cut the sod for the commencement of an Ultra-Modern Transit Accommodation facility for Officers of the Ghana Army, at the Arakan Officers’ Mess.

The groundbreaking event took place on Thursday May 14th, 2020 and the project is expected to be completed in a period of 12 months.

The 22-bedroom facility, made up of 20 Standard and 2 Executive rooms, a restaurant, a bar, a swimming pool, a kitchen and an office, will be funded from accrued moneys from contributions from Officers on United Nations Observer Missions to date, and additionally, Mr John Watson, CEO of Mayfair Estates Ltd and Dr Daniel McKorley, CEO Mcdan Shipping Company, have pledged to fund part of the Project.

Speaking as the Guest of Honour, Lt Gen Akwa stated that construction work towards a modern accommodation for troops on operational training and exercises is also on-going at the Bundase Training Camp.

General Akwa also stated the Military High Command’s observation of how over the years, serving and retired Officers, who travel from the hinterland to Accra for official or private duties, struggle to get comfortable places to rest.

“You will also recall that some Officers from outside Units who were not able to find places to stay in close proximity of Burma Camp, often reported late for pre-departure formalities during embarkation for external operations. The lateness led to them being dropped from their respective GHANBATTS”, General Akwa recalled.

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) – Major General (Maj Gen) Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has set up a 4-Member Board of Officers chaired by the Commanding Officer of 153 Armoured Recce Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) William Ackah, to monitor and supervise the construction of this project.

Dignitaries present included were Maj Gen Oppong-Peprah, the Chief of the Naval Staff – Rear Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of the Air Staff – Air Vice Marshal Frank Hanson, Chief of Staff, GHQ – Rear Admiral IA Yakubu.

Others were the Director-General Logistics, Army – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Prince Osei-Owusu, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Southern Command – Brig Gen AY Nsiah, Mr John Watson Otumfour, CEO, Mayfair Estates Limited and Dr Daniel McKorley, CEO, McDan Shipping Company.
