The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) – Major General (Maj Gen) Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has cut the sod to commence the construction of a 320-bedroom facility, meant to host Other Ranks (ORs) from outstation Units, nominated for external Peace Support Operations (PSO) and to accommodate soldiers, detailed for operational and administrative duties in Accra.
General Oppong-Peprah speaking at the groundbreaking event, which took place on Friday, 8th May, 2020, at the Arakan Barracks, said the location was chosen for the Transit Accommodation Complex, due to the vast land available and, for its long-lasting role of hosting departing and arriving Ghana Battalions (GHANBATTS) from and to United Nations Peacekeeping theaters.
The 3-Floor Transit Accommodation Complex will consist of 80-bedrooms per floor, hosting 320 soldiers at a time, with a kitchen and dining complex, ironing area and a multi-purpose courtyard.
The Project works would be carried out by Messrs Paragon Company Limited and will be funded by the Army Headquarters (HQ), from its PSO budget, while a Four-member BOD, chaired by the Commanding Officer (CO), Five Battalion of Infantry (5Bn) – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Seth Odei, has been set up to monitor and supervise the construction.
The COAS also stated that support is also being solicited from Friends of the Ghana Army and other private organizations, to construct a PSO Village.
General Oppong-Peprah added that the motivation for the facility was an encounter he had few years back as Director, Army Peacekeeping Operations (DAPKOP), when he had to oversee a PSO embarkation process, which was disrupted by heavy rains, soaking and flooding luggage, equipment, and sleeping places of troops.
COAS Maj Gen Oppong-Peprah additionally revealed that, in line with the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) High Command’s efforts towards the provision of the necessary logistics for operations and administration, all PSO cars and buses, have been repaired and refurbished.
Dignitaries present at the ceremony included the Director General, Logistics – Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Prince Osei-Wusu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Southern Command (S/COMD) – Brig Gen Abraham Yeboah Nsiah, Mr Kwasi Serebour – Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Paragon Company Limited and Mr John Watson Otumfour – CEO, Mayfair Estates Ltd.
