The Second Battalion of Infantry (2Bn) has cut sod for the construction of an 8-unit one storey single officers’ accommodation block for Young Officers, which would be called the AYAMDO BLOCK in honour of the current Chief of Army Staff (COAS) – Major General (Maj Gen) William Azure Ayamdo.
The sod cutting took place on Sunday, 23rd June, 2019 as part of a Thanksgiving and Religious Parade by the Unit to see off some of its personnel to South Lebanon for peacekeeping duties and the completion of the block would honour General Ayamdo for his enduring quest for excellence, professionalism and rectitude.
The Commanding Officer (CO) of the Unit – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Abass Atuluk said that, one of the major problems facing the Unit and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in general, was accommodation for young officers.
Lt Col Atuluk revealed that 2Bn has just 4 units single quarter accommodation for 23 young officers, hence this spurred the Unit to initiate the eight (8) unit one (1) storey accommodation project for them.
The CO further expressed his special thanks to the contractor on the project and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of First Choice Engineering Ltd – Mr Charles Kwesi Apreku, for his tireless effort to get the project completed.
Other Generals honoured in this manner by the Unit in the past have been the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) – Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Obed Boamah Akwa, (was honoured with the Unit’s ultramodern operations room complex – the Akwa Complex) and the current Chief of Staff (COS) at the General Headquarters – Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah (the ultramodern 3D theatre – the Oppong-Peprah Theatre).
Land preparation, excavations, casting of foundation and the gathering of materials had already begun at the time of the sod cutting ceremony.
